what is AlaskaWriters Homestead, and why am I doing this?
“I’d been spending so much time advising friends and colleagues on freelancing and Website issues, I thought, ‘I should make this a part of my job.’” First of all, thank you for your interest in AlaskaWriters.com, home of the AlaskaWriters community and Homestead. If you have already visited my other, professional writing site, you may already know I am a freelance writer myself, with a 12+ year background in journalism (mostly in daily newspapers) and a specialty in science writing, both of which I care about deeply. Though I have made my share of Web sites, I don’t aspire to become a full-time Web designer. So why have I built this site? Three reasons: 1) So we can find one another: Alaska has a vibrant and diverse writing community. But we often divide ourselves into categories that makes the state’s creative wealth less than obvious. As this site grows, I hope to help bring us together with a variety of communication tools. (Bulletin boards or chat rooms could be in our future.) 2) So others can find us: Why does your local daily online newspaper get hundreds (or hundreds of thousands) of hits each day, while your little site is lucky to get a dozen? New visitors are attracted by links. Repeat visitors expect new content of interest to them. The concepts are simple, but hard to pull off alone.By banding together, we can make the most of the Web. 3) To take the obvious next step: Lately, I’d been spending so much time advising friends and colleagues on freelancing and Web site issues, I thought: I should make this a part of my job. So I did. I hope the decision benefits us all! In addition to offering news, tips and tools for Alaskans, I also relish the opportunity to work one-on-one with a few select writers who are serious about taking the next step developing their own newspaper journalism or freelance writing careers. Take a look around. If you want to be notified as the site changes and new features become available, please sign up (top of page) for my newsletter. And do write me (editor@alaskawriters.com) with any questions or suggestions. Thanks for stopping by! Best,
